Marwan Rechmaoui

Marwan was a highlight of the Istanbul Biennial. His work using mixed materials in sculpture uniquely explores architectural forms in the context of social trauma.

As a lebanese artist, Rechmaoui has lived in an environment where architectural forms express social upheaval. Bombings, battles and targeted drone strikes leave barbed rebar and fallen tiles in a way that is not only damaging human welfare, but has a profound effect on emotional and social mechanisms.

Rechmaoui's torn constructions in his Istanbul Biennial exhibition explore ripped rebar and social trauma with near human figures. Fragmented concrete columns with hairy metal wires and squarish leaning concrete towers intrude the visitor's space. Rechmaoui's work is simultaneously cold and chaotic and human.
